Water and Fishing

Ponds, lakes and streams are valuable resources of the South Chilcotin Mountains. The fishing activities allow an active participation of all users in research about different issues. Fishermen use their knowledge about the Chilcotin Mountains’ streams and rivers to collect data on abundance and habitat of local species. The Stewardship Foundation uses this data for future studies.

Pearson Pond, located in Gun Creek / Bridge River Watershed.

The purpose of this project is to examine the impact of the lowering water table of the lake, the reduced lake size, the plant and animal life affected, as well as the effect on the surrounding area and Mowson Pond.

Pond

The lowered water level has turned 50% of the lake area into mud flats. The water temperature is increasing in the summer and sediment from the channel is washing into fish rearing Gun Creek, during spring run-off.

This lake needs rehabilitation by controlling the water level with a constructed dam. The water table in Pearson Pond appears to affect the neighbouring Mowson Pond.

This project led since 1990 needs partners.
