Background
The Wilderness Stewardship and Training Foundation strives to take resource management to a broader level to include research and local knowledge to influence management decisions on all resources. The goal is to train public to become stewards of the wilderness resources.
The foundation’s directors have a combined experience of over three decades of hands-on experience in managing wilderness stewardship projects, wilderness steward training, and addressing past referrals and assessments, having sought a balance between resource use and preservation in the Cariboo Chilcotin region for over 30 years.
The foundation’s mission is to develop environmental research and training programs in the fields of resource management and environmental stewardship, to distribute literature based on research findings in the fields described above, and to promote sustainable living practices and responsible resource management among businesses and households.
Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-driven individual to act as the foundation’s coordinator and oversee its various activities. The coordinator will have the opportunity to work in the field on exciting projects such as Mountain Goat population counts and collecting grizzly bear hair samples. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to gain hands-on experience in the field.
The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating ongoing stewardship and resource management projects, planning future projects, securing funding for the foundation’s projects/activities, responding to consultations and referrals, as well as any other duties deemed necessary.
The successful candidate will be expected to work 40 hours per week. The coordinator will be living onsite, where he/she has direct access to her field work and the beautiful south Chicoltin Mountains. The coordinator will be provided with accommodation and full board onsite by Chilcotin Holidays, a partner of the foundation. During days off, there are opportunities to explore various activities offered by Chilcotin Holidays such as hiking, grizzly viewing and horse riding.
Job duties
- Ensure the implementation of the foundation’s mission and objectives
- Write up funding proposals and oversee all funding activities
- Coordinate stewardship and resource management projects
- Develop citizen science projects for the collection of wildlife data
- Data collection and analyses
- Respond to consultations and referrals
- Organize the recruitment and involvement of research
- Organize meetings with relevant stakeholders
- Convey progress, issues and challenges to the board of directors
Qualifications
- Degree in environmental science, biology, ecology or related discipline
- At least 2 years in fundraising experience, including writing proposals
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills
- Strong networking skills
- Very organized; able to organize self and others
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programmes or similar (e.g. Word, Excel, Access etc)
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Permission to work in Canada
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in non-profit organization
- Experience of relevant provincial legislation
- Experience of computerised data management (e.g. using SPSS or similar)
- Knowledge of local flora and fauna
- Full, clean driver’s licence
- Experience with horses

We are also offering a great opportunity to gain practical work experience as an intern or volunteer in Wilderness and Forestry Management. The successful candidate will be involved in all parts of our Stewardship work, including research work in the field, wildlife surveys, marketing, public relations and fund-raising.
As an intern, you will be expected to work 30 hours a week and have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Chilcotin Mountains countryside during hikes, horseback rides and various other activities in your free time. Room and full board is provided on site by the Foundation's partner Chilcotin Holidays.
We expect you to be self-motivated and comfortable with living on a guest ranch in the wilderness and working in a remote environment.
